Why some songs are much louder
A sudden jump between tracks is often not a broken player. Many albums were released at different loudness.
Streaming apps usually hide that. ECHO stays closer to the file, so the difference shows up.

Volume and loudness are not the same

Turning every knob to 100% does not “complete” a quiet recording. It only makes whatever is already in the file more dangerous.
Why tracks disagree
Section titled “Why tracks disagree”Common causes:
- Era. Older albums are often quieter. Recent pop is often denser and louder.
- Genre. Classical and jazz use more dynamics. Electronic and pop are often limited hard.
- Some files include loudness info. Others do not.
- ECHO volume, Windows volume, a hardware knob, and Windows “loudness equalization” can all be on at once.
- An equalizer that boosts a band will make some songs jump.

Safety check first
Section titled “Safety check first”When a track hits hard:
- Turn ECHO’s player volume down first.
- Leave Windows volume below the top.
- Leave headroom on the headphone or speaker knob.
- Disable Windows spatial sound, bass boost, and loudness equalization once.
- If you just enabled EQ, turn it off and play the same track.
If the same track is fine on system output and only fails in exclusive or ASIO mode, start with Audio output. Do not blame the file first.
What ReplayGain does
Section titled “What ReplayGain does”ReplayGain means: read how loud this track is, then add or subtract a little at play time so tracks feel closer.
It changes playback gain. It does not permanently rewrite the audio to be louder.

The control usually lives under Settings -> Playback. Use the label in your current build.
Change only this one setting, then try three tracks: a quiet older song, a loud pop track, and a soft vocal.
When more volume is the wrong fix

A boring daily setup
Section titled “A boring daily setup”- Leave Windows volume in a comfortable place, not 100%.
- Use ECHO’s player volume for small moves.
- Turn ReplayGain on only if albums still jump too much.
- Turn EQ on last, if you still want a taste change.
- When something breaks, disable ReplayGain and EQ, and return to system output.
Separate “play an album safely” from “make every track equally loud and nicer.” The first one comes first.
