Why Did My Song Speed Change?
If a song suddenly sounds too slow, too fast, pitch-shifted, or the progress bar moves strangely, do not reinstall ECHO first. The usual cause is a mismatch in the output chain: Windows default format, the audio driver, DSP, resampling, or an advanced output mode.
Fast Recovery
Section titled “Fast Recovery”Return to a stable path first:
- Open
Settings -> Playback, then switch the output mode toSystemorWASAPI Shared. - Disable speed changes, pitch changes, EQ, ReplayGain, channel tools, ECHO SRC / upsampling, DSD, HQPlayer, and automix.
- Play a normal MP3 or FLAC file. Do not troubleshoot with DSD, extreme sample-rate test files, or remote sources first.
- Confirm the Windows output device is correct and ECHO is not muted in the volume mixer.
- If playback returns to normal, enable advanced features one at a time.
If System or WASAPI Shared works but Exclusive, ASIO, DSD, HQPlayer, or ECHO SRC does not, the issue is usually in the advanced output chain, driver, or device support range. It does not mean ECHO damaged your music file.
Do Not Set Windows To An Extreme Sample Rate
Section titled “Do Not Set Windows To An Extreme Sample Rate”Do not set Windows Sound -> More sound settings -> Playback device -> Advanced -> Default format to an extremely high sample rate just because it looks more HiFi.
Even if your system shows an absurdly high number, setting Windows to that sample rate does not magically improve every song. The Windows shared-mode default format is a working format between the system mixer and your device driver, not a free audio-quality upgrade.
Setting it too high can cause:
- Extra driver or system resampling.
- Crackling, stutter, silence, or device instability.
- Mismatches between shared output, exclusive output, and the DAC’s locked sample rate.
- Harder troubleshooting because Windows, ECHO, the driver, and the DAC may all be involved.
- Half-speed, double-speed, or strange progress behavior on some broken driver paths.
For daily use, keep the Windows default format in a stable range, such as 24 bit, 48 kHz, or another common format your device handles reliably.
Why This Setting Is A Bad Fix
Section titled “Why This Setting Is A Bad Fix”Sample rate means how many audio samples exist per second. 44.1 kHz means 44,100 samples per second. 96 kHz means 96,000 samples per second. A real high-sample-rate source keeps those extra samples during recording, production, or export.
The Windows default format does not re-record the song, and it cannot create missing detail from nowhere. When you change the Windows shared-mode default format from 44.1 kHz to 384 kHz, you are mostly telling the Windows mixer: “deliver shared output to the device in this working format.” If the original song is 44.1 kHz, Windows can only convert it with a resampling algorithm. That may be transparent, unnecessary, or worse, but it does not add information that was never in the source.
It also affects more than ECHO. In shared mode, browsers, games, chat apps, system sounds, and music playback can all enter the same Windows mixing path. An extreme default format means the whole shared audio path has to work around that format:
- Lower-sample-rate audio may be upsampled by the system.
- Audio from different apps has to be mixed into one format.
- Some drivers may convert that format again into what the device actually supports.
- Bluetooth, virtual audio devices, and audio enhancement tools may process it again.
So seeing 384 kHz in Windows does not mean the DAC is reliably receiving 384 kHz, and it does not turn the song into a real 384 kHz source. It only means one stage of the system chain is using that working format.
The reliable approach is: respect the source file’s real sample rate, use a format your device handles stably, and use an explicit processing path such as ECHO SRC when you actually want upsampling.
If You Want A Higher Sample Rate
Section titled “If You Want A Higher Sample Rate”Use one of these real paths:
- Use source files that are actually high sample rate, such as real 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, or 192 kHz files.
- Unlock ECHO Pro and use ECHO SRC / upsampling to resample PCM audio to a higher target rate inside ECHO.
The Windows default format is not a high-sample-rate source. Sending a 44.1 kHz song through the Windows mixer at 384 kHz does not turn it into a real 384 kHz master.
Check ECHO Settings
Section titled “Check ECHO Settings”If the speed problem only happens in ECHO, check:
- Whether speed, pitch, or tempo features are enabled.
- Whether ECHO SRC / upsampling is enabled while the DAC or driver does not support the target rate.
- Whether DSD, HQPlayer, ASIO, Exclusive, or another advanced output path is also enabled.
- Whether a virtual audio device, ASIO wrapper, or system audio enhancement driver is in the path.
To verify raw playback, disable all DSP and upsampling, then play a normal file through System or WASAPI Shared.
ECHO SRC Notes
Section titled “ECHO SRC Notes”ECHO SRC is an ECHO Pro advanced PCM upsampling feature. It is not the same thing as the Windows default format. For best results:
- Use a wired external DAC, USB decoder, or vendor audio driver.
- Use
WASAPI Exclusiveor the official vendorASIOdriver when validating upsampling. - Start with
2x PCMor4x PCM; do not jump to the highest multiplier first. - If playback becomes slow, fast, crackly, unstable, or silent, disable ECHO SRC first, then return to
SystemorWASAPI Shared.

What To Include In A Report
Section titled “What To Include In A Report”If playback still changes speed after the recovery steps, include:
- ECHO output mode, output device, and current DSP / ECHO SRC state.
- File format, sample rate, and bit depth.
- A screenshot of the Windows default format.
- The actual sample rate shown by your DAC, sound card, or driver panel.
- Whether Bluetooth, a virtual audio device, ASIO4ALL, FlexASIO, Voicemeeter, or another third-party audio chain is involved.
