Audio Setup Advice

This page is for users who want ECHO to sound good and stay stable. Audio settings contain many impressive words: WASAPI, ASIO, DSD, sample rate, upsampling, exclusive mode, and third-party drivers. They can be useful, but they are not switches that automatically improve sound quality.

Start with stable playback, a good device chain, and sane volume. Then think about high-resolution sources or upsampling.

  1. For regular headphones, laptop audio, Bluetooth, or motherboard output, use System, Windows Output, or WASAPI Shared.
  2. For an external DAC, you can try WASAPI Exclusive after shared mode is stable.
  3. Do not assume ASIO is better. Some vendor ASIO drivers are immature, and third-party ASIO layers are usually not worth it for listening.
  4. ASIO4ALL does not make headphones sound better.
  5. Do not over-demand DSD from small dongles or entry-level DACs. Improve the device chain first.
  6. In Windows sound settings, keep the default format at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz for daily use.
  7. If you want real upsampling, use a dedicated tool such as HQPlayer. Raising the Windows default sample rate is not the same thing.

For daily use, 24-bit / 48 kHz is a safe default when your device supports it. 16-bit / 44.1 kHz is also fine.

Do not choose the highest number just because it is available. A very high Windows default format can cause every system sound to be resampled to that rate, including music, games, browsers, video players, and chat apps. It may increase CPU load, add latency, and trigger driver problems without making the sound better.

This is not high-quality upsampling. It is usually just system resampling to a shared output format.

WASAPI Shared is the normal Windows shared audio path. It is best for daily use because multiple apps can play sound together.

WASAPI Exclusive lets the player take exclusive control of the device. It can reduce system mixing and let the player open the device at the track’s format, but it depends heavily on the device and driver.

ASIO is mainly useful for professional audio interfaces, low-latency recording, and DAW workflows. It is not a sound-quality enhancer for ordinary headphones.

For normal listening:

  • Official ASIO drivers for professional interfaces can be useful.
  • Immature vendor drivers are not worth forcing.
  • Third-party ASIO drivers are usually unnecessary.
  • ASIO4ALL does not turn a basic device into a better DAC.
  • Direct headphones, Bluetooth, and most dongles are better served by WASAPI or Windows output.

If ASIO or ASIO4ALL breaks, the first place to look is the driver author or device vendor. The player can call the driver, but it cannot make an unstable driver reliable.

The principle stays here: install USB or ASIO drivers only from the manufacturer website, manufacturer support portal, or an official regional site. ECHO only calls the audio device driver already installed through the operating system audio APIs, and does not provide installation help, repair, debugging, compatibility workarounds, or support for any third-party driver.

DSD can be useful, but it is not a requirement for good sound. For dongles, entry-level DACs, and ordinary headphones, chasing native DSD support often gives less benefit than improving the actual device chain.

Many DSD files on the market are also not guaranteed to come from a native DSD recording chain. Some are upsampled, converted, or repackaged. A good PCM master may sound better, and careful upsampling with a dedicated tool may suit your setup better.

Use DSD only when the device supports it reliably. If it causes noise, heat, battery drain, slow switching, or playback failure, return to PCM.

Upsampling is not automatically better because the number is larger. Good upsampling depends on algorithms, filters, hardware capacity, and a stable output path.

If you want to experiment:

  1. Use a dedicated tool such as HQPlayer.
  2. Make sure the computer is fast enough.
  3. Make sure the DAC supports the target rate.
  4. Change one setting at a time.
  5. Lower the settings if you hear pops, latency, or high CPU usage.

Upsampling is optional. Stability matters more than impressive numbers.

When you hear no sound, pops, half-speed playback, high latency, or failed track switching:

  1. Return to System, Windows Output, or WASAPI Shared.
  2. Disable ASIO, exclusive mode, DSD, upsampling, DSP, EQ, ReplayGain, and speed changes.
  3. Set Windows default format back to 24-bit / 48 kHz or 16-bit / 44.1 kHz.
  4. Test with a normal MP3 or FLAC that is known to work.
  5. Try another output device.
  6. Update or roll back the official DAC or audio driver.
  7. Check whether another app is holding exclusive control of the device.

After basic playback is stable, enable advanced options one by one.

Good audio is not a numbers contest. Stable playback, a clean device chain, sensible volume, and good recordings matter more than forcing the highest mode.
